Boldly going where no others dare to go – Yekaterina PekerPioneer designer Yekaterina Peker is stepping largely outside the parameters of Australian fashion as we know it. Yekaterina’s self-titled label is a fervent reminder to the industry that originality still exists, and the labels and designers that dare to go there never disappoint.
Top marks for this girl
Yekaterina graduated in the top five students of an Advanced Diploma Fashion course at the East Sydney Design Studio in 2005. Her hard work gave her the opportunity to showcase her collection for the first time at MAFW in April 2006. The label displayed its first complete Spring/Summer collection to awe-struck audiences, and received special mentions in the media internationally. Following the unveiling of this range, Yekaterina was invited to showcase her label at Propeller Sydney in September 2006. Propeller is an event that recognises outstanding design and talent.
Rewarding work
Later the same month, Yekaterina took her designs to Melbourne during Fashion Week, where it exhibited in the DEBUT section of Fashion Exposed, the new competition for emerging designers. It is described as a fantastic opportunity for designers to showcase to an international audience of more than 10 000 people.
Yekaterina won the Avant Garde award at the event, an award that recognises new and spectacular single looks. Her design, The Balloon Dress, stunned and pleased onlookers and won by unanimous vote.
Go Sci Fi with Yekaterina
In March 2007, Yekaterina will exhibit her Spring/Summer 08 collection at the Sydney Convention Centre during Fashion Exposed in the Preview section. This range is inspired by Frida Kahlo and science fiction novel, Solaris.
Expect amazingly unique designs that are in touch with a sense of fantasy. Find a different take on patterns, fabric use and dress design. A garment from this label will not be ignored – you will be turning heads from the minute you leave the house.
Yekaterina is bursting with ingenuity and originality but remains modest about her ideas and designs. “I like to challenge the design concepts by using as many textures, colours and construction ideas in one garment as possible, without making it look busy or over the top”, she says.
Yekaterina Peker is exclusively stocked in Melbourne, but expect to find her spreading her wings very soon.
